The organizations Prevention for Progress (PFP) and Civic Engagement and Activism Center (CEAC) are conducting informational sessions in Bolnisi and Marneuli to enhance the local populations’ accessibility to judicial systems. These sessions are facilitated through the USAID Rule of Law Program.
As a part of the ongoing project titled “Raising Awareness About the Judicial System in Marneuli and Bolnisi Municipalities,” the fourth in a series of meetings took place on September 13 at 4:00 PM. This gathering was convened in the Sadakhlo community of the Marneuli municipality, specifically in Khuldara village at the Institute of New Thought. During the meeting, the project team acquainted community members with essential details regarding their legal rights and entitlements when participating in court processes. They outlined where individuals can locate pre-drafted claim forms and illuminated the avenues available for acquiring complimentary legal assistance.
Attendees also brought attention to the issues they frequently encounter when engaging with the court system. A pressing concern was the proficiency of translators and the recurrent delays in court proceedings. It was noted that a pervasive lack of trust in the judicial process exists amongst citizens due to insufficient understanding of court procedures and unawareness of the potential legal ramifications following a court dispute.
A significant revelation during this discussion was the heightened vulnerability of women suffering from domestic violence, who are hesitant to approach the court for fear of familial repercussions and potential separation from their children. The discussion highlighted a gap in knowledge regarding the resources available to these women, including government services, shelter facilities for those abused, and provisions for free legal help.
To assist in bridging the information gap, a concise guide crafted by a legal expert was disseminated amongst the attendees, offering insights into the discussed topics and providing a platform for them to pose any court-related questions.
The project anticipates organizing four additional meetings, extending its reach beyond the regional centers to encompass remote villages within the Marneuli and Bolnisi municipalities. The objective remains to foster a community that is well-informed and empowered to navigate the complexities of the legal system effectively.
